This Swine Life: Pig Named 6-7 Granted Clemency by Miami-Dade Leader.
It might not have been at the equivalent scale as pardoning Thanksgiving turkeys, but the mayor of Miami-Dade conducted a ceremonial pardon event this week by ritually sparing the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. She is worthy of this pardon. No offenses are on her docket,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with obvious nods to the extraordinary and sizable number of executive clemencies issued since the beginning of a current administration.
“If we disregard eating six or seven apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “I hope she experiences a prosperous future away from worry.”
This ceremony, which both honors and questions the local cultural practice of eating roast pork during the holidays, was created to mirror the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The swine, provided by a first responder, was christened after the popular vernacular phrase of young people yelling “six seven” – deriving from a musical verse – often without clear purpose. The trend became so pervasive that a leading lexicon site recently declared “6-7” its annual vocabulary selection.
A Future Secured
The pardoned swine is now set to enjoy its days at a rural sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the event’s official press release.
“This swine clemency has become a beloved tradition to kick off the end-of-year celebrations,” said Eric Castellanos, in a notably cheerful message.
“It represents the essence of Miami: joyful, multicultural, and based in heritage that unite the community. Every time, we are delighted to mark culture and compassion in a way only Miami can.”
Attendees enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach croquetas and strong coffee as they marked Six Seven’s big moment.
