On his initial day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “transform” New York City, declaring “a different age” and an bold beginning to his tenure.

A Historic Mayor

The young democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A opportunity of this kind comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the people themselves whose hold the controls for transformation,” Mamdani added.

Rejecting advice to temper hopes, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will govern with courage and vision.”

Steering by Democratic Socialist Convictions

Mamdani did not shy away from his core beliefs. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not abandon my principles for concern of being called extreme,” he said to loud cheers.

The inauguration was a two-part event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over the status quo.

An Ambitious Policy Agenda

Mamdani now faces one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform promising:

• Universal childcare
• No-cost bus transit
• A cap on rents for nearly 1 million households
• A pilot of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion cost of these services may pose a hurdle to finance. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the wealthiest New Yorkers and corporations. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing Political Challenges

The new mayor also faces apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past comments regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past comments.

Mamdani has attempted to smooth over these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was described as surprisingly friendly.

The Core Challenges of Leadership

In the end, New York mayors are judged on their success in delivering basic services: sanitation, curbing the rat infestation, repairing roadways, and making sure smooth transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's anti-crime efforts, pointing to record low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual warning about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his address with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
