The ice cream brand's Founding Partner Claims Unilever Blocked Pro-Palestinian Frozen Dessert Product
One of the co-founders behind the famous ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has announced how corporate owner the multinational conglomerate stopped the launch for an innovative pro-Palestinian frozen dessert product.
The entrepreneur, that established the business with his partner, disclosed that he plans to personally create the controversial flavor as part of an individual series showcasing causes Ben & Jerry's has been barred from addressing publicly.
Longstanding Conflict Between Creators and Parent Company
The recent announcement deepens the ongoing conflict between the internationally recognized ice cream maker with its corporate parent, the British packaged goods giant that acquired the ice cream brand for over two decades.
Both founders have asserted that the parent company along with their ice cream division Magnum improperly prevented their company from "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
Watermelon Flavor becoming an Emblem for Solidarity
Mr. Cohen revealed through social media how he's developing an innovative watermelon-based sorbet, asking for consumer ideas regarding the product's name plus additional components.
“I'm doing what they were prevented from doing,” the founder commented from his kitchen. “I'm creating a watermelon-based frozen dessert that calls for lasting ceasefire in Palestine and calls for repairing the damage that was done there.”
The watermelon has emerged as a symbol for support for Palestinians because of its coloration, which mirror those of Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Historical Activism and Current Changes
In 2021, the ice cream company ceased sales of their merchandise in areas under Israeli control, leading to the parent company transferring the Israeli operation over to an Israeli distributor, thus allowing continued sales in the occupied West Bank.
The new dessert series will be created through Ben's Best, the socially conscious ice cream brand which originally created several years back for endorsing ex- political contender Bernie Sanders via the flavor "Bernie's Back".
Leadership Changes plus Upcoming Intentions
Mr. Cohen revealed that he will create additional ice cream flavors focusing on issues that Ben & Jerry's was prevented from speaking about openly by Unilever.
The announcement comes after partner Mr. Greenfield stepped down from the company recently, after decades of involvement, citing worries regarding how the company's autonomy was compromised after corporate moves to restrict their advocacy work.
At that time, Ben Cohen stated that “My partner has a really big heart and this conflict with Unilever was deeply distressing him."
"My heart leads me to continue to work within the organization to advocate for corporate autonomy so that it can fulfill the social mission, the principles which it was founded on and has maintained for decades," he explained to media outlets.
