Patients Coming Off Weight-Loss Injections Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that patients who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a major medical journal points out that while overweight people frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals using such drugs must be cognizant of the danger of quick weight regain when the medication is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a reversion to original mass within about 18 months.

Weighing Treatments

The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.

Scientists note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Experts believe the way of the drugs explains the amplified weight return.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Issue?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have come off the jabs report a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"It was like something activating and you become ravenous," described one woman.

The struggle is worsened if individuals have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Growing Interest

Survey data show that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts emphasize that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success hinges on combined behavioural support.
