The city's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to live in the historic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the affordable apartment that became a focal point during his run for office.

A Historic Residence

Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the primary dwelling for nearly all New York City mayors from the post-war period.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a key issue, hesitated to declare this decision right away following his electoral win in November.

"The choice was based on keeping my family safe and the imperative to focusing all of my focus on enacting the agenda for affordability New Yorkers elected me on," stated Mamdani in his announcement.

Thanking a Neighborhood

He resided in the Astoria neighbourhood, an area known for its vibrant cultural enclaves and culinary diversity.

"To the people of Astoria: my gratitude for demonstrating what is great about New York City," he noted.

"Even though I'm moving there, Astoria will always live a part of me and my efforts as mayor," he said.

Political Debate

During his race for mayor, Mamdani linked his core platform – a rent freeze – to his personal living arrangements.

Yet his opponents, including former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for occupying the rent-stabilized unit although he came from a prominent family.

Not All Mayors Stayed

Not every mayor have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, chose to live in his private home on the Upper East Side for his tenure, which concluded in 2012.

Instead, Bloomberg argued it ought to be a venue for public city functions, and advocated for significant upgrades of the aging mansion.

A Grand New Home

As he settles into Gracie Mansion sometime around his swearing-in on 1 January, he will find himself in surroundings far removed from his humble Astoria apartment.

Adorned in butter yellow paint, green shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home situated by the East River.

Within, the ground floor of the classically designed mansion is appointed to reflect the home's original era.

The estate, which is said to has five bedrooms, also has increased security measures to protect the mayor and his family.

Haunted History

Past occupants have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of former mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors would sometimes open and closing inexplicably, and the floors emitted odd sounds.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "I don't care what people claim," he insisted in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

Mamdani's current apartment is rent-stabilized, meaning the city sets limits on how much property owners can increase rent each year.

Tenants consider these apartments essential protections as the housing expenses exceeds what many can afford.

Data indicated Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.

According to the property website Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
