Michael Jordan Tells Court He ‘Wasn’t Afraid’ of the Racing Body in Legal Battle

Michael Jeffrey Jordan, as he cordially introduced himself in a federal courtroom on Friday, stated that his competitive side and novelty within the sport emboldened his effort with 23XI Racing to confront Nascar over alleged violations of antitrust rules.

Team Investment and a Will to Win

Jordan shared financial and corporate details of his 23XI team, revealing he invested $40 million of his own funds into the Nascar Cup series team launched with partner Polk and driver Hamlin.

“It fell to someone to act,” Jordan stated during testimony. “I was a new person, I had no fear. I believed I could take on Nascar as a whole. I felt as far as the sport it needed to be looked at through a new lens.”

The Core Dispute: Charter Agreements and Contract Pressure

At issue is the expiration of a 2016 deal where Nascar provided each team a “charter”. This system mirrors other professional sports with separately owned franchises, such as the Charlotte Hornets or the Carolina Panthers. The agreement was set to expire in 2024 when Nascar insisted on charter membership renewals.

Jordan was on the witness stand for about sixty minutes and exited the courthouse to pandemonium, with fans and media clamoring for a view or a photo of the global icon.

Leading the Legal Charge

23XI Racing is at the forefront of the push along with Front Row Motorsports for Nascar to change a operating model Jordan contended is breaking the law to keep two hands on the wheel.

“Don’t do this to us,” Gibbs recounted was the message to Nascar’s leadership. The response was, “Whether I have 20 charters, that’s what I have. If there are 30, that’s the number.”
