Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Shooting

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and feels certain the athlete will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York early Sunday morning.

Glenn noted that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during a recent discussion.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they’re in good spirits and he will come through this without issue.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd would leave the medical facility, where his condition is described as serious yet stable.

“Don’t know just yet,” Glenn remarked. “However, I can share, hearing him speak, his attitude was encouraging. Once more, that reassures me, that he feels like that and he’s talking that way.”

New York police issued security footage Monday of a man sought in the attack on the player. The reason behind the incident is still being looked into and officials stated it is unknown if Boyd was singled out. No other injuries were reported.

The attack took place just after 2am on Sunday in the area between Madison Square Garden and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, 29, was taken to a medical center after suffering a wound to the stomach, as reported. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has been in his thoughts “constantly” since he heard about the shooting. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse recently welcomed a newborn.

“What immediately crossed my mind, he has a new baby,” Glenn noted. “My mind went to his family, considering his child and my priority is his well-being. That was my main concern.
“A certain process is underway, which I won’t get into, but It is reassuring that he will recover excellently.”

Boyd did not participate during the current season, his first with the Jets, after being placed on injured reserve on 18 August with an injury to his shoulder that needed an operation.

He signed with New York as a free agent in spring and was projected as a key part of an improved special teams group under Glenn and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during a practice session on August 2 and was taken away on a cart.

Boyd has remained around the team throughout the season while recovering from the shoulder injury.

“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn said. “In fact, he comes to the games all the time. He’s fully engaged. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”

Boyd, a Texas native, played his first four seasons with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in 2019. He joined the Arizona Cardinals in last year and then joined Houston’s practice squad subsequently. Boyd inked a single-season agreement worth $1.6m with the Jets in the spring.
