The British designer Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer who crafted some of the most iconic looks worn by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died at the age of 80.

His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and performative fashion, such as the pastel suits that featured in rock band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "their hit Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message across their platforms."

His passing follows less than a month after he debuted his latest collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Singer Lily Allen modelled a dress inspired by the famous black velvet "dress" historically worn by Princess Diana.

A Lasting Legacy

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price headed for London during the sixties to study at the renowned Royal College of Art.

Upon completing his studies, he started his work in clothing for men at the label Stirling Copper and was responsible for the form-fitting, button-fly pants that Sir Mick Jagger sported during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.

He founded his own label in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show was launched by looks from the famed model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the bridal gown Price created for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A key creative partner of the late David Bowie, Price designed the memorable jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to blend elements of men's and women's fashion along with his technical proficiency in crafting form-fitting garments made him a "true original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.

During the nineties, he commenced designing outfits for Camilla, now Queen Consort, including several ensembles for her American tour after becoming Duchess.

After a career spanning over fifty years, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in conjunction with the label 16Arlington.

  • Defined Shapes: Central to his design philosophy.
  • Dramatic Impact: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • A Client List from Rock to Royalty: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

Design circles mourns the loss to a genuine innovator whose influence on fashion and music remains indelibly etched.
